Subject: Tesselated sheets?

Post Posted: 17 Feb 2014, 23:12

Does anyone know of a way/tool/custom brush builder to create tesselated sheets?

Maybe it sounds strange but I need to create a zone portal (a water surface) that is not a flat polygon. If I edit the vertexes of a regular sheet in a way that its verticles are not on the same plane, I end up with a nice big HOM. I know I could create two triangles via brush clipping but I don't like that workaround too much. I figured there must be a simple way to address a simple issue like this. Maybe there isn't. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the 2D shape editor to made a tessellated sheet, or just several triangular sheets.

Ha, it didn't even occur to me that I could put the 2d shape editor to such a simple use!:) Perfect solution.

Thanks ebd!

Thanks for that too. I will take a look.

Just out of curiosity I looked into the default brushbuilder uscripts to see if I could reverse-engineer it and create a button for tesselated sheets in the interface. It worked.

Here it is for everyone's pleasure: Tesselated Sheet Brush Builder

Woah, where did you find the default brushbuilder scrips? I've looked high and low and can't seem to locate the package that has them!

Just be careful using sheets as portals this way. Yes it can be done and yes it can solve a lot of workarounds for a oddball portal, yet for some reason they can easily host BSP glitches. Had some weird ones myself.

First uncheck "actor classes only", then as shown on ividyon's screenshot.

Yeah, noticed. But eventually I managed to get away with it... so far. Nevertheless, I am curious whether I can finish the map without noticable bsp glitches. To make things more complicated I am using it on an already a fairly complex terrain brush built in 3ds max. Trying to keep the rest of the geometry built on it as clean and neatly aligned as possible.

Damnit, I thought this would show the source for the other brushbuilders, i.e. all these:

Building brushes is great and all, but brushbuilders can do a hell of a lot more than that. I want to know how the more advanced selection brushbuilders work.

I believe most of those buttons simply call console commands. You can define your own buttons triggering the console command of your choice by editing your UnrealEd.ini file. For example:

Code: Select all

[UserDefinedGroup]
NumButtons=1
Button0=Align Camera on Selected Actor,UDAlignCam, CAMERA ALIGN

Where the first parameter is the hover text, the second is the name of the bmp file in your editorres folder, and the third one is the console command itself.

I took the above example from the Boutons de Fordy button pack listed here in medor's post: http://unrealtournament.99.free.fr/foru ... f=55&t=508

However, I do not have a reference of all the available commands. If anyone has info on that, I would be interested too.
