Scripted Textures and Particle Emitters?!!

I am doing some investigation on these cool particle emitters Unreal has now, first I tried doing a Fire Texture with the Effect Editor in Unreal. It turned out lovely, however it has some limitations in color I think... and a lot of the resulting shapes are sparky and I am looking to be able to just create textures in a 3rd party software and bring them in through scripted textures. Is there any documentation on what may be available for this kind of documentation for animated textures?
