Stopping the bots is a priority

There is no way you can stop humans from registering. One possibility is to force admin activation but in that case the admin requires some kind of confirmation that the user isn't a bot, e.g. requiring a mail being sent to the admin stating the reason for registering. Unfortunately that is a put-off for new user plus extra work for the admin.

IMHO the registration agreement question is too easy and can be solved by bots. Force the user to think a little bit to find the answer (for example: What is the domain name of this site in reverse order? answer : gro.PSlaernU)

I used to have a problem with bots registering but solved that by requiring a word to be found in an image on my site and requiring inversion of uppercase and lowercase, never had a bot since and humans not interested in the site (the advertisers) are put off by the extra work needed.

edit: in case of bots: add the user to the Bot group (banning IPs is just a very temporary solution, better to block the user-agent)

It's true that it has been quite intense over the past 24 hours for some reason!

ADMINS BLOCK THE REGISTRATIONS

Hey,

to experiment, I've just replaced the registration question with a set of new, Unreal-related questions. I hope this will give us some peace. If it doesn't get better, I will switch registrations over to admin approval.

Many thanks to Semfry for deleting posts and banning spammers during all this time, and to UBerserker (and others) for diligently reporting spam posts to make it easier.

Thanks. Might be useful to ban the ones that have registered because they'll still post.

Spambots are annoying me, I wish I could ban them myself!

Well, I guess we've got the answer to that now.

There actually hasn't been a new registration since! These bots seem to idle for a few days after registration before they wake up and begin their work.

If you want a community to die, just block registration for new users. ;-)
