Synopsis:
  • GELF Prison Camp:
"I say let's get out there and twat it!" - Dave Lister
This week's Red Dwarf contains scenes that are unsuitable for younger viewers and people of a nervous disposition. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

    Pointless:
    [Data unavailable]

    Morene:
You are a mechanic onboard the "Morene", a cargo ship shot down by Skaarj destroyers. You and a friend have been hiding in the lower parts of the ship, not daring to leave the area.
Two weeks have passed, and you have run out of food and water. You have heard the Skaarj working day and night, and your best guess is that they're turning your ship into some sort of base.
Your friend died last night. You decide to make a run for it.
Discuss!

For Morene I had to manually set the gamespeed of the end cutscene for it to work, so it probably doesn't display as it was intended, but it's better than it not working.

Gelf Prison Camp: Very short and simple visually, but there are some clear ideas here; the idea of finding an alternative path to get around the giant Titan (although the size with few other edits makes it pretty buggy and harmless anyway, which is probably for the better here), and the Brutes having their projectiles modified, when their default attacks would be annoying with how cramped it is, shows some care for the player (weird how only the dead Brute at the start has a unique skin though, given it's presumably one of the enemies). The torch objects used for some random sci-fi detail in the prison also amused me, given there isn't really anything like that elsewhere. The final ship at least conceptually looks kind of cool. I don't know much about the show it's based on, so I'm not sure whether this map captures anything of the style, but, given that it's a sci-fi comedy and this has about two messages and pretty standard Unreal gameplay with pseudo-stealth I'm guessing the answer is "not much".

Pointless: While simple and designed as a sort of tech-demo to test various engine features, there is some attempt at an environment here, and even with no story except the literal ending message, you can work out the premise of infiltrating a place, and there's some attempts at realism like the broken down dining room/living quarters area. The ending room in particular is a few details off actually looking pretty nice, and makes it a shame it just ends there. The gameplay is simple but there's at least some interactions like the generator, and the collapsing mining cave; the latter can kill you quite easily, but the Stinger ammo seems placed in safe spots so there it at least some vague guidance to it. Without even an exit it just sort of stops with no real climax though.

Morene: Mostly quite decent looking, although the 2D shape editor details are a little too obvious at times. While mostly warehouse type areas there are some hints that you're only seeing a small part of the ship, which helps makes it believable, along with stuff like the moving elevators you can't access, but show that something is going on here. It's also the only one of these that fully attempts a story, and an ending, even if it's a basic "escape the doomed ship" one. The gameplay here has some intensity to it as the limited supplies and combination of cramped corridors and large rooms with lots of cover creates a lot of ambush points to watch out for. The small platforming bit at the start begins it nicely too as it's not tough enough to be frustrating, and the damage you take from the acid is pretty minor (also kind of funny how the "water" type used is a bugged one where you can zoom around in it). The only part I don't like is the wait for the elevator part way in, as it doesn't really fit pacing wise (if it came after the more intense parts it could work, but it's before), and ends up feeling like filler for such a short map.

I only played Morene.
It is surely very unique looking but it's the embodiment of an "intro"-type playable map. The whole thing felt like an intro to something that never happened, I swear at one point early on I thought I had to fight a Queen since you hear her sounds playing from afar but there's just nothing. Still, memorable for the layout alone.

Yeah I think the green ship at the end (meant to be Starbug) is pretty much the only connection to the show apart from the mention of "Gelf".

Now that I think about it I'd actually like to see a well done Red Dwarf Unreal mappack lmao.

I know one thing: preparation for the review of GELF prison camp was a pain in the arse. The research I had to do wasn't much but it felt troublesome.

Not to mention, had it not been for the now-largely-decried shovelware CDs, we wouldn't even have that...

Pointless was much more enjoyable of the two, a regular custom SP level from Unreal's early days as a fresh retail release.

It could work using something like firetrucks for dialogue and such :) of course it would require someone with good knowledge of the show (and even being part Brit myself, I didn't know about Red Dwarf before this map's review landed last year - a likely consequence of not having spent more than a few years living in the UK).

The common thread here, of course, is that all 3 maps are a first release for their respective authors and are tech based / sci-fi oriented. And while Pointless doesn't say anything explicitly, it makes you start in a closed space with your back to the wall with the exit in front of you, just like the others which are explicitly about escaping... basically, they are all a form of retread of the way Unreal started (from a game design perspective). Even while Pointless does feel like it transitions toward infiltrating a place as Semfry said, the first part - with the dead human bodies lying around and the broken down living quarters area - points to a human space that was invaded by the aliens you encounter (so you first need to break out from that).

I agree with TigerTheGreat that Pointless is actually more enjoyable than the more original Gelf Prison Camp, and while I'd shave off a few points to the latter's review score, I also acknowledge that it would likely still score a bit more highly than the former due to the scheme rewarding efforts in the narrative department... and since I'm on the topic of review scores, I'd also like to take the opportunity to highlight how Morene, by far the most well realised out of these 3 maps, has the lowest rating! Mister_Prophet, you were way too severe :) I know the review dates back to when the USP review scheme was updated to be more stringent, but time has clearly mellowed the average review score (*cough* 94% *cough*). Of course, Proph has stated before how relative the review score is, and how it would be nice to have more second opinions, but just sticking to the matter at hand, I'd say that while Morene was rated a bit too highly in the old review scheme (at 6.5/10), it would deserve being scored in the low 50s, not 30s.

As mentioned by others here, Morene can still look really good and the gameplay is actually interesting as it presents a challenge and a couple of twists (I particularly like the Brute lobbing grenades at you, it is well timed to give you time to react AND result in the triggering of explosive barrels - this moment is even used as the screenshot for the map in the UT Oldskool menu :) ) - but as UB said, on a first playthrough it gives the illusion of having more to it than it actually has and I too recall being surprised by the sound of the Queen's screeching while riding that elevator... still, the map has a proper ending which is more than can be said of the vast majority of people's first releases.

Gelf Prison Camp at least has an OK Starbug which is appropriately the most memorable set piece of the map, but the only other unique art asset was indeed only used once for a corpse - "check out the GELF's naked arse!" the readme said gleefully. I interpret this as meaning that the dead GELF was actually rescuing you (and succeeded in breaking the bars to your cell before being killed), and hence looks different from the ordinary Brutes...
