How about giving each map's "void" a custom colour that fits the colour scheme of the map as a whole?

I don't know if any of you guys play worms, but frankly.... do it like worms does it. I can't elaborate right now, (later) but i can definately say that the worms method is perfect for filling in that black void.

Some parts of maps won't have that void at all.
