Re: 22/03/2025 - "Beneath Xidia" by Hourences & Mr. Prophet
Issues I found :
- This map has difficulty filtering, but it's poorly balanced since Easy is still very hard. The worst part is that higher difficulties remove ammo pickups, difficulties that require more ammo since enemies have more health.
- There isn't any Coop filtering.
- The map has a ...

Yeah, the falling rocks were me. I was being cute. Sorry. I tended to misjudge player reaction more back then (had a similar event in the SL demo with a skaarj pushing crates that had to get adjusted for the final version).
I do very much appreciate the rewatches though  I'm reminded that in ...

Let's see how much I remember.
I appreciate the commentary reports since I tend to forgot a lot. For instance, I forgot how many mappers we hoped to test out before Sjoerd decided to just do it himself. This was his big Max Terrain test, and Semfry states something that I suppose I can't argue ...

I for one appreciate Iron's explanation and insight to how he put his level together. Using this old game as a means to get out some stresses creatively is something to treasure. I even hesitated to review it for him at the time because I did not think it was appropriate to use the review scores to ...

I love how Jazzy makes his human/tech environments. This kind of design is unmatched. If Xidia opened the door to the big UT SP tech scene, Zephon kicked it open. But Xenome brought a freight train through packed with boxcars full of angsty punk band marauders shooting jets of flaming oil like that ...

End of the year Update
Just wanted to say some things here. A lot of this will be musing, though I wanted to give some project updates along with. New levels are still being prospected (including an eager new addition made by Fashahhh, who seems intent on surpassing himself one level at a time ...

Re: 30/11/2024 - "The Crystal Manta" by Skywolf
This the best level about fighting mantas ever made for Unreal. It is also a super creative charmer and probably the level of The Descent I think about the most whenever that pack springs to mind. This is also a fantastic sales pitch for why the 227 patch has the long term survivability factor for ...

Re: 23/11/2024 - "Escape from Skaarj Base + The Betrayer's Path" by Atje & Hyperion
I never interacted with Hyperion back in the day. I'd be curious to hear his take on all this stuff, or any of the Team Vortex guys that would still be around. I'm sure they have interesting insight. Sadly, I do not think our community has been too lucky to have much discourse with that team even in ...

Re: 02/11/2024 - "The Long Way Around" by Aspide
I wanted to make a comment out of respect for Aspide's work here, even though my general impressions about A Friend In Need are documented in my review. I really appreciate Semfry's attention to getting as much of the details shown in his playthrough as possible. It is necessary since Aspide makes ...

Yes, we did used to have quite different ideas. I recall wanting to rap you on the knuckles when the rest of us delivered 12* classic Unreal-style maps and you delivered something beautiful, high-tech and entirely unlike anything Unreal ever featured! I was also disappointed that you and EBM ...

I get to comment on a Hellscrag level!
Me and Mike have not always seen eye to eye over the years when it comes to matters of tone (although I find as I've gotten older that I have come around to his way of thinking when it comes to classic Unreal styled levels). I've said this before and probably ...

Re: 10/08/2024 - "Vecchie Ferite" by Aspide
You don't need to wait to get to this map to know there's something special about A Friend In Need , but just in case it doesn't click, it should here. Aspide uses some tricks with narrative that I used myself in some of the Terran enemy maps from Seven Bullets, where you put the player in violent ...

Re: 20/07/2024 - "Orbit + Landing + Outpost Pheonix" by Will "Mr. Prophet" Drekker
Some Trivia and personal cons:
-Main influence would be the first level of Super Metroid. I always loved how you go through this whole spooky zone until a security light detects you, and when you backtrack the level is suddenly alive.
-Also a lot of influence from AVP 1998 and Red Faction.

Re: 20/07/2024 - "Orbit + Landing + Outpost Pheonix" by Will "Mr. Prophet" Drekker
I have to say that I was surprised by the trifecta. Unusual for our normally 1 map focus discussions (not counting intro/extro combinations, as they have come in the past). Two playable prologues + a full level might be bending the rules...but if we're gonna bend them then I am pleased that the ...
