Any tips on how to avoid them in large scale maps?

There's not much you can do aside from breaking up the level and reducing what's visible. Zone well and zone often, and don't allow lots of complex geometry to be dynamically lit all at the same time when possible. This means reducing the amount of high-poly objects in areas where combat is frequent on a large scale, as lots of dynamic lights often cause UT to freeze and/or crash with the occlusion fault error in my experience.

CTF-Big-CASTLE][ is a good example of what NOT to do. The map is visually impressive, but virtually all the detail is visible at once, and with heavy firefights, often results in occlude crashes or UT freezing up, especially if you get blasted into the sky and look down.
