Waffnuffly wrote:DavidM's tutorial is good for the basics, but his stupid little red lamps have no place in 90% of the buildings people create. Why would an engineer designing a mine just add superfluous little red lamps everywhere? I wish more people would realize that games are supposed to represent real places and try to design them accordingly--at least for singleplayer maps.

I don't think the little red lights section is the most important part of the tutorial. :P

The lighting really is a little too bland - there is not even one hint of contrasting colours anywhere, and while white lights may be considered realistic, realism should not be a primary design concern here - especially since the map pack's called "wtf" - and instead should look interesting and moderately rich in colours and contrasts, considering blandness is a sickness many Mine maps have caught! The way the lamps also light the ceiling around them also doesn't seem right, and the lava appears way over-brightened and filled with Myscha greening (excessive usage of lights leading to the colours washing out) even without gamma correction applied.

Video was nice... would like to see more of that! 8)

As for the mines.. eh.. wooden floors and metal ceiling?...now THAT is "wtf" :P
Other than that.. yeah, like Waff said, some railings will do.. other than that it looks fine... :)

OMG so many critics here.

I should have stated in first post that these are beta pictures....no...scratch that...ALPHA pictures. Was already planning on adding support beams for cat walk and guard rails and texture changes and lighting changes as well. Dunno why the lava came out so over brightened....doesn't look like that in game :/

And yeah I just noticed the ceiling being metal and floors wooden....wtf was Peanuts thinking? I'll ask him tonight lol :P

So I figured while I'm at it, I'll show a couple shots of the church I'm working on 8)

I summoned a couple nali's so you get the comparison in size.

Nice architecture! Fix the coronas, though, they look a bit weird. You may want to use sprites for the glow instead, because coronas look too huge over a larger distance!

Yeah, make the corona DrawScale for the candles a lot smaller, at least 25% of what it is now. For candles, I usually make them around 0.05 or so. Also, don't use that texture for candles' coronas; it's really ugly. Use the little yellow one instead.

Yeah I noticed the coronas are a bit over the top. They're supposed to fade away though as you get farther, but 227 had to take that out due to a color problem it caused. I'm going to ask Smirf to make it an option though.

Here's what it SHOULD look like without the constant corona brightness.

And what candles? There are no candles lol :P

Chandelier candles.

Also the "fade out as you get farther way" coronas from RTNP look like ass. You should instead just make them smaller so that they aren't so big at their max visible range.

[Edit] They look like ass everywhere, not just in this specific case

lol alright.

And I didnt add any candles on the chandelier. That's what i was trying to say. There are no candles on it. Just a corona to make it seem like there is. Guess it fooled you huh? :P

The texture itself, I thought, had candles built into it. Maybe I'm remembering it differently.

Not really... you do have to use coronas.

Why do you not use sprites? They can give off a sufficient glow to resemble candlelight without making the whole thing look bad from further away.

I know THAT :P I meant I thought the texture had depictions of SOMETHING candle-like on them, and you just needed to add the coronas to make them look decent.

I haven't really looked at that texture in ages since it's not particularly useful for most things, especially compared to a good BSP chandelier (like the one you made for BFNP Scrag).

^Shivi, glance over my tut on coronas. Might help you there. Just skip to the part where I mention them.

Yeah it's an interesting concept. However, I usually just get Peanuts to do my lighting for me...and he hasn't touched this section of the map yet. I'll post a screenie when (and if) he messes with it a bit. Maybe I'll find the time to do it myself 8)

But I already fixed the coronas
