Couldn't sleep last night so I made this.

The rotating needs some tweaking but other than that it's pretty cool. Had to make it stay at the same pitch else it'll get messed up :(

How did you set which way it points? Did you have to set markers?

Nope, rotation.yaw=0 is north by default. Don't know what I'm going to do with it from here on though :P

That's pretty cool! I think you can get around the pitch issue by using quaternion rotation, but fuck if I know how to do that. I just remember UArchitect being a math genius who figured out all sorts of workarounds for rotation problems using those.

I have an idea for what you could use it for.
In a level there could be multiple choices of which way to go, and you could have read a translator message giving you a clue to do with compass directions e.g:

"Seargant Josef Yulvaren's Log: Why did the they have to build the base so bloody far north? My legs are killing me....etc"

So if you were trying to find the base Yulvaren mentioned, then you would use his clue.
(Hope that you understand what I mean...)

Well, I'd do a model and rotate a bone inside the model really... But that's me XD

Pretty cool thing!

Very awesome indeed! I like the fact that it's actually a hand-held pickup visible in thirdperson view, unlike the translator or other such items.

Remodeled it so it has the automag's hand holding it. Too lazy to redesign the hand grip so I cut off some fingers! Result:

ehm... i would expect to keep the compass horizontal, so you'll see the directions.. I mean.. so that you'll know what is in front of you and behind you. (instead of above you and behind you).. just a thought. Don't know if that's feasable tho..

well that was a problem I had. I'm trying to figure out how to animate a part of a mesh. Once that's done I can make it work properly.

You either take a skeletal mesh and animate one bone or you make an animation of 360 frames - wheelspin of the compas - and just set the AnimFrame depending on the rotation.

Exactly what I was thinking! Just gotta figure out how to rotate it in 3ds max :|
